Challenges of Dining Out on a Gluten-Free Diet
Dining out while adhering to a restricted diet can often present unforeseen challenges. Just yesterday, I was reminded of this when we ventured out for a late Sunday meal.
We had contacted the restaurant beforehand, one I have visited before. A typical issue with traditional Sunday roast dinners is the gravy; however, we were assured that the chef would prepare a gluten-free version. As of now, I am yet to find any establishment that offers gluten-free Yorkshire pudding. If you know of one, please let us know so we can share this information on our website.
Having spent the entire day decorating and needing a break, we eagerly anticipated our meal. Everything proceeded smoothly until it was time for dessert.
The Dessert Dilemma
Those familiar with me are aware that I particularly enjoy desserts and prefer options beyond just fruit when dining out. It frustrates me when restaurants offer only fruit or fruit salad as it reflects minimal creativity.
Returning to our meal: The menu board presented two promising gluten-free dessert options—or so I thought—Eton Mess (a blend of crushed meringue, raspberries, and whipped cream) and lemon crème brûlée. Opting for Eton Mess, I requested the waiter confirm its gluten-free status.
A few minutes later he returned saying that strawberries with cream were my only safe choice—not disastrous but somewhat disappointing if you’re expecting something else entirely.
Navigating Misunderstandings
The next step is deciding whether to challenge their statement or quietly accept it. My sister received her Eton Mess; unfortunately served in an edible biscuit basket made from wheat—not suitable for someone avoiding gluten—and as for crème brûlée? Who knows?
Coping Strategies in Restaurants
I believe society’s increasing tendency towards litigation makes restaurants cautious—sometimes leading them astray due to ignorance rather than malice or negligence—in such situations it might help sending ahead “What You Can And Cannot Eat” guidelines before visiting again which will hopefully reduce confusion over dietary restrictions moving forward!
